HARTZ Search invites you to explore an exciting opportunity with our newest client, CENTRA Health in Lynchburg, Virginia for a Senior Director, Emergency Services for Centra Lynchburg General Hospital and the Gretna Medical Center.  Centra Lynchburg General Hospital is a 358-bed hospital, Magnet Designated, Level II Trauma Center, Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospital, Beacon Award, and Forbes Safest Hospital in America.  Centra Lynchburg General Hospital’s Emergency Department has 51 beds and manages over 85K annual visits with multiple PODS to manage Behavioral Health patients, Pediatrics and Ligature Free PODS.  The ED utilizes a Fast-track system, triage space and has a need for growth.  The Gretna Medical Center is a free-standing Emergency Room that manages over 30K annual visits.

With more than 8,500 employees, 400 employed providers and physicians and a medical staff of nearly 800, providing care in 70 locations, Centra serves over 500,000 people throughout central and southern Virginia.  Centra provides medical services to patients across a geographic area roughly the size of the state of New Jersey, covering approximately 8,000 square miles, through many facilities and practices.

The Senior Director, Emergency Services is responsible and accountable for directing the nursing and clinical support activities at the hospital(s) and in conjunction with appropriate administrative and physician leadership the ongoing development of clinical programs and services of the hospital. The Director collaborates with the Lynchburg Chief Nursing Officer in allocating resources. The ideal candidate will have experience in high-volume Emergency department, master facility planning, construction/ renovation of ED units, progressive thoughts around patient flow, ED layouts and the ability to increase patient experience scores through teamwork and standardization.  Our client is seeking a dynamic Nurse Executive to lead, plan and implement plans to manage the growth of the department, improve patient experience metrics and develop collaborative partnerships with providers, and improve throughput issues.


  • 51 ED bays in the hospital; 85K annual visits, Level II trauma center
  • Reporting directly to the Centra Lynchburg General Hospital Chief Nursing Officer
  • 4 Direct Reports & 193 Total FTE’s
  • Leadership of Gretna Medical Center – freestanding ED with over 30K annual visits
  • Competitive compensation, Annual Incentive Program, relocation offered



  • Position requires BSN and an Advanced Degree: MBA, MSN, MHA or EdD is required due to Magnet designation
  • Certified Emergency Nurse heavily preferred
  • Minimum 5 years leadership experience in a busy Emergency Department
  • Centra Health utilizes Cerner EMR and Siemens Imaging equipment
  • Strong finance background, budgeting skills, equipment selection and exceptional physician relations
