America’s Essential Hospitals (AEH) is the leading association and champion for hospitals dedicated to equitable, high-quality care for all, including those who face social and financial barriers to care. Communities depend on these hospitals for care across the continuum, health care workforce training, research, public health and health equity, and other services. These hospitals often serve as a level I trauma center, provide other highly specialized services, are major teaching or academic medical centers, operate extensive ambulatory networks, and work to address social risk factors in their community. They are distinguished by their high volumes of uncompensated care and Medicaid, as well as a commitment to a mission of caring for low-income people and other marginalized populations. Essential hospitals innovate and adapt to lead all of health care toward better outcomes and value.
AEH is a 501(c)6 trade association incorporated in the District of Columbia. Since 1981, AEH has advanced policies and programs that promote health, health care access, and equity. They support more than 350 public and private nonprofit members with nonpartisan advocacy, policy development, research, education, and leadership development. AEH has a rich history and long record of accomplishments on issues related to care for historically marginalized people and communities.
